    Instrumental Music, 7-12

    Mr. Arnts

The class “Band” is made up of two main important areas—band rehearsals and band lessons.

                1)  Band Rehearsal:  Rehearsals are in your schedule and occur every other day.  Attendance will be taken in each rehearsal and attendance is graded as part of your participation grade.  Band rehearsals that are “skipped” will result in a detention for each occurrence. It is important that you are:

Prompt:  Be in your seat, ready to play at 4 mins. past the mod change.

Prepared:  Plan ahead and have your instrument and folder at every rehearsal

Silent:  A Band rehearsal is an opportunity for us to rehear our music, so it is important that we can listen (remember: LISTEN = SILENT).

    2)      Lessons:  Lessons are mandatory and equal a substantial part of your band

grade.  You will be assigned a time in your schedule for a group lesson; attendance will be taken and recorded in the front office.  Attending lessons also counts as part of your participation grade.

Grades:  Your band grade is computed in the following manner: (see sample score sheet)

    1)      Participation:  How active are you in attending and participating in band.

    a.       Band Attendance and Being Prepared For Band

    b.      Rehearsal Behavior

    c.       Lesson Attendance and Being Prepared for Lessons

    2)      Basic Performance Grade:  How well you perform on the following exercises:

    a.       Scales

    b.      Scale Studies

    c.       Rhythm Studies

    d.      Technique Studies

    e.       Alternate Scales

    3)      Solo Music:  Each student will be assigned an easy solo to perform each grading period.  Your performance of that solo will be graded in your lesson and your grade will be based on the following:

    a.       Tone

    b.      Intonation

    c.       Technique

    d.      Accuracy

    e.       Interpretation

    4)      Band Music:  You’ll be assigned band music to perform as part of your lesson

    a.       Accuracy

    b.      Technique

    c.       Interpretation

Dropping Band:  It is strongly recommended that new and incoming students wait until the completion of their first marking period before initiating the process of dropping band.

Public Performance:  A schedule of the band’s public performances and other important dates is included with these rules and regulations.  A missed Mandatory Performance will result in a failing grade for the ten week period in which the performance is held, regardless of the above grading procedure.

Concert Dress:  Concerts are an opportunity for performing groups to display a unified effort in the performance of various styles of music; therefore it is necessary to look uniform so that the attention of the audience is solely on the music:

Women:  Black knee-length skirts (or longer—Pants are allowed) and a White blouse, Black nylons (socks if pants), and Black shoes.  (Tank Tops, Midriffs, Spaghetti Straps, Shorts/Skorts, or slits that go above the knee are considered inappropriate and are not permitted).

Men:  Black dress pants (no shorts), White Shirt (not a tee shirt) Black socks, Black shoes.  Ties are optional but appreciated.

Please understand that my job is to teach you how to play your instrument and to encourage you to improve.  I am also responsible for teaching you how to appreciate music.  Therefore, much of the time we will be working on something that you are unfamiliar with or maybe even dislike.  That is OK.  Please stick with me and I’m sure that we will play at least one piece of music that you’ll enjoy and many others that you will grow to like.  It is all part of the process.

    Senior High School Jazz Band:

Rehearsals are only on Day 2 starting at 2:25.  There are 7 rehearsals in a marking period (or only 7 rehearsals (or less) between concerts).  Each rehearsal is worth 14.28571 points. If you miss 1 unexcused rehearsal, you’ll receive a grade of 86 for jazz band, 2 = 71, 3 = 57.  (Events, such as field trips and early dismissals for sporting events are considered excused absences.)

    a)      Please see/arrange with your organizations/clubs/coaches to get the needed information of “mandatory” meetings before coming to jazz band, if there should be a conflict. (Missing rehearsal for a meeting is considered an unexcused absence)

    b)      You are to either see me, or ask the teacher to call me, well before 2:25, if you have been asked you to stay with a teacher for detention, make-up test/work or for extra help on a Jazz Band Day.  I will talk to your teacher to resolve the conflict.
