Special Education at HCS

Hammondsport Central School District believes that students are an important part of our community, the district is committed to educating students with disabilities to their fullest potential in a setting that is integrated to the maximum extent possible.  As students come to schools with more diverse needs, schools need to find ways to provide students with multiple options for learning.  Our goal is to provide students with disabilities a sound academic education while encompassing their need for skills necessary for independent living.

To do this, teachers differentiate instruction by recognizing student’s varying background knowledge, readiness, language, learning preferences and interests and reacting responsively.  Differentiated instruction is a process to approach teaching and learning environment for students with differing abilities in the same class.  The intent is to maximize each student’s growth and individual success by meeting each student where he or she is thus assisting in the learning process.

Sophomores-Seniors

If your child has a disability he/she may be eligible for test accommodations for the PSAT/SAT exams.  The only way for your child to be approved is to complete the request for special testing accommodations and return them to Katie Boyer for her signature.  These forms are available to all Sophomores and Juniors around the month of April from the guidance office.  Please contact the office in early April to assure that the forms are in.

Special Education Referrals

Parents may refer their child to the Committee on Special Education or Committee on Preschool Special Education at anytime. Parent Referrals for children suspected to have a disability can be picked up in the CSE Office.  It is important that parents meet with the Director of Special Education or the building principal prior to filling out the referral.  This meeting will outline the process for the referral as well as the committee meeting.

Please feel free to contact Katie Boyer (569-5200) for any further questions or concerns.
